Virtual reality giants unveil VirtualLink as a standardized cable that may simplify VR rigs - gambillweating
VirtualLink
Virtual reality headsets testament standardize connected a new physical connector received, known as VirtualLink, that bequeath be designed around the extant USB-C port.
A pool of the VR industry bigwigs, including Nvidia, Oculus, Valve, AMD, and Microsoft, have got backed the interface. Notable exceptions look to comprise Sony, whose PlayStation VR wasn't listed among the promoter companies, and Intel, which has backed the Thunderbolt specification. Companies that wish to join the consortium can do so at VirtualLink.org, which for right now resolves to a Google Sites address.
Details of the VirtualLink spec itself weren't like a sho available, though the member companies said that the spec will support four high-speed HBR3 DisplayPort lanes, which are scalable for subsequent needs; a USB 3.1 data channel for supporting high-resolution cameras and sensors; and capable 27 watts of mightiness. It's not immediately clear what bandwidth the cable television will support, or how scalable IT leave allow VR headsets to equal. Anandtech, however, did the maths and concluded that the specification allows for 4K @ 120Hz with 8 bits per tinge.
What the member companies did say, however, was that the cable would furnish a standardized solution for VR cabling, which has used traditional HDMI display and USB cables. It also provides other kick to USB-C, which is quickly replacement the traditional USB-A cabling. "Simulating reality requires fabulous visual faithfulness and processing power," said Jason Paul, Nvidia's general manager of gaming and VR, in a statement. "With a single, high-bandwidth cable, VirtualLink unlocks the full potential of the Microcomputer to power amazing VR experiences."
What this means to you: Suppose of this as a VR squall to arms. Supposedly VirtualLink will first appearance in "next-coevals" VR devices, merely IT's not all the way on the button when that will be. But when it does, make a point to squint: We already have "standard" USB-C ports as well A ones that support the new Bolt spec, each typically labeled with a small icon. Leave VirtualLink add a third?
